The Governor of Wau, Andrea Mayar, has directed all security agencies in the state not to hinder the work of humanitarian agencies and the workers.

The directive comes after a meeting of the state security committee following reports that the humanitarian agencies were denied access to deliver assistance.

According to the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, 67 aid workers have been killed since December 2013.

OCHA says more than 600 humanitarian access incidents have been reported in different parts of the country this year.

“We have written letters to organizations and distributed to all our checkpoints and then put at Tombura road, Raja, and Bagari checkpoints, saying that don’t obstruct the work of organizations operating there,” Andrea Mayar told Eye Radio.

He has now appointed a coordinator to facilitate the work between his office and humanitarian agencies.

Mr Mayar says humanitarian organizations have “little to do” in Wau town and it would be better for them to move to the villages.
