Journalists’ situation worrying – Taban

Author : | Published: Tuesday, November 1, 2016

The Chairman of Association for Media Development in South Sudan says arrest, torture, and killing of journalists in South Sudan is worrying.

Alfred Taban says there are many cases of journalists being killed and no suspects have been apprehended by the authorities.

This remark comes ahead of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. The day will be marked tomorrow.

AMDISS chairman, Alfred Taban says more than ten journalists have been killed over the last two years.

Mr Taban says others were abducted and tortured, but no arrests have been made.

He told Eye Radio that it is worrying that no one has been taken to court for killing a journalist.

“We know they die in the hands of some people, and these people have not been apprehended,” Mr Taban said.

“We’ve not heard of any person arrested or taken to court and this is very bad for Journalists in this country.”

In a related development, the Project Manager of Journalists for Human Rights in South Sudan, Grand McDonald, says freedom of press is the best way to disseminate real information to the public.

He said local journalists always face risks while performing their duties.

“What happens is this; outside of the threats to the Journalists, outside of the deaths of Journalists, what actually happens is, if Journalists are not able to fully report on what’s happening, what you are doing is silencing the community,” McDonald stressed.

Ahead of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, UNESCO said impunity breeds impunity.

It says impunity is a crime against the exercise of freedom of expression and human rights.

Yesterday, the Committee to Protect Journalists ranked South Sudan as the second worst country for journalists. According to the ranking, South Sudan comes second after Somalia.
