UNMISS has announced that two special UN envoys have arrived in the country to highlight issues that are affecting children in the ongoing conflict.

Humanitarian agencies say thousands of children are likely to have been separated from their families as a result of the latest violence in South Sudan, an aid agency has warned.

Many children are surviving on their own in very remote areas.

The two are the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Children and armed Conflict, Leila Zerrougi and the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova.

The envoys will also be accompanied by the famous actor, Forest Whitaker, who is UNESCO’s special envoy for peace and Reconciliation.

“They want to put stress and highlight on the plight of children during conflict during the current conflict, be it the recruitment of children, the education system, which is broken down or collapsing and also the occupation of schools by military personnel,” Ariane Quentier, UNMISS Spokesperson, told Eye Radio.

The visit of the three special envoys will last five days.
