JU administration block

Students of the University of Juba have petitioned the Minister of Education to improve their living conditions.

The students demanded the reinstatement of the student union, and the provision of accommodation and meals.

In the letter addressed to the Minister, Dr. John Gai Yoah, the students also demanded a fixed academic calendar.

The letter was read by one of the student representatives during a meeting between the minister and the students yesterday in Juba:

“The faculty of Law it was built but has no latrine,” read the letter.

“There are no halls, no lecturers; the administration must be changed.”

In his remark, Dr. John Gai said there is a need to do an overhaul of the higher education system in the country for the universities to function with standards.

“All the vice chancellors that have been running all our university were appointed by General Omar Hassan Al Bashir; General Salva Kiir has not appointed his vice chancellor:

“Same to all the curricula that you are using -were used under the Republic of Sudan.

“All the problems that you have now are in the four universities.

“The problem for students, academic and the management are linked directly to the running of the university.”

Mr. Gai said his ministry will soon develop a plan of action to ensure all the public universities are staffed with lecturers and problems of the students sorted.
