The International Committee of the Red Cross says the humanitarian situation is deteriorating in Unity and Upper Nile states.

It says as a result of the recent clashes in the two states, thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes to bushes and swamps.

The International Committee of the Red Cross says the IDPs survive on little or no food and less access to health care.

In a statement, it says in Unity state, the agency said the civilian population lost its most of it means of sustenance due to continued instability.

“In Leer, and parts of Koch and Mayendit counties, the populationhas largely exhausted its traditional coping mechanisms” said Daniel Littlejohn, Head of the ICRC sub delegation in Unity state. “Properties, crops, cattle and other forms of sustenance have been lost or destroyed,” the statement read.

It also says the access to humanitarian aid and regular healthcare is very limited with the constant instability.

In Upper Nile, the agency says that the civilian population has been continuously displaced.

“…..displacements continue unabated, further exacerbating the dire humanitarian situation. Tensions between the West and the East banks of the Nile since April this year, led to many inhabitants from Bienythiang, Riang and Rom payams to flee inland, mainly into Akoka town, while on the opposite bank of the river, residents of the town of Kodok similarly moved away from the Nile, for security reasons,” adding that: “The ICRC estimates that many suffer from shortage of food, a critical economic situation and a host community simply unable to accommodate the needs of the displaced.”
