Bursaries of students on government scholarships in Egypt have been paid, says the Deputy Minister of Education, Bol Makueng.

The students had occupied the South Sudanese Embassy in Cairo for two months in protest, demanding eleven months of unpaid arrears.

Mr. Makueng said have they left the premises after the payment was done.

“They were paid….the payment has been just completed today and now we don’t have any problem and they have left the embassy, which is what we wanted. And then we gave them another checking letter to sign so that they do not again repeat this act. The signing also includes them not again asking the government to pay them this money”.

He said they also signed an agreement not to cause any chaos again in cases of delayed payment from the side of the government.

“If the government gets the money, it will be brought to them but if we have problems of not getting money. They should not again repeat this.”

Mr. Makueng denied allegations by the students that they are going to terminate their scholarships.

He said only students who have stayed for periods exceeding the agreed academic years will have their scholarships terminated.
