Fashoda: Insecurity causes market prices to rise

Author : | Published: Wednesday, April 8, 2015

Prices of basic commodities in Fashoda, Upper Nile, have risen due to insecurity, an official has said.

The county commissioner says traders are not able to reach the area due to recent communal clashes with neighboring Akoka County.

Morris Adiang told Eye Radio’s Dawn show this morning, that the presence of white army is hindering movement of goods to area.

“White army is still at the banks of the Nile and they are causing problems to the owners of boats who bring goods from Malakal and Kaka,” said Mr Adiang.

“We are now depending on goods that are coming from Sudan.”

However, he said the trade is not flourishing.

“Traders that are bringing goods from Sudan are facing problems of the currency because their currency’s value is like ours. So they see that there are no benefits.”

Mr Adiang told Eye Radio on Monday that two people were killed in Lul village in an attack by white army gunmen.

Last week, more than nine people were also killed in a clash between communities in the county and those in neighboring Akoka.

But he said the security situation is now clam.
