The level of food importation from neighboring countries to Yei River County has decline drastically in the last two months.

This is according to a report released this week after an assessment was conducted by the Department of Agriculture and its partners.

Yei’s assistant commissioner for agriculture, Edmond Gogo, says the import decline is due to increase in production by local farmers.

The production level has increased from 60% to 90% as compared to the previous harvest season.

He says the report also indicates that most farmers have moved from subsistence agriculture to agro-business.

“People are no longer sleeping because they have found out that the source of money is entirely through agriculture,” he stated.

“Indeed they have doubled their efforts and most of the farmers have become market oriented farmers that is why if you go to the rural markets, at least 90% of the produce sold in the markets are entirely produced within the locality.”

Initially, most of foodstuffs came from the neighboring Congo and Uganda.
