A group of elders from the Dinka and the Nuer communities have agreed to establish one Council of Elders to advocate for peace on behalf of their communities.

The document commits them to jointly engage the warring parties in finding a lasting solution to the crisis.
The elders met for two days in Nairobi at the residence of Retired Kenyan President, Daniel Arap Moi in order to also push for reconciliation between their communities.
They signed the agreement yesterday. Arap Moi urged the elders to develop common approaches to restoring a lasting peace in South Sudan.
“We should be united to improve the lives of the people who were created by God,” said Mr Moi.
“The question of power and resources should not be difficult to resolve if the leadership of South Sudan is committed to fair play –which is the first step to the maintenance of peace and security.”
The meeting of the elders also discussed ways in which wealth and power could be shared equitably amongst the 64 tribes of South Sudan.
The elders asked President Moi to engage President Salva Kiir and Dr. Riek Machar in separate dialogue in order to narrow areas of disagreement in the peace talks.
“Your Excellency, we will be [happy if you] call our two principles and seat them the way you have seated us, so that they talk in your presence,” suggested an elder.
“We would like to move above our communities or personal interests in order to put our country forward or first,” said another elder
President Arap Moi pledged his support to ending the 14 month conflict in South Sudan.
While President of Kenya, Moi was instrumental in encouraging the reunification of the SPLM after the return of Dr. Riek Machar in 2002.
He also helped spearhead the initial stages of the negotiations of the CPA between the SPLM and the government of Sudan.
