VP Wani bodyguard killed colleague over allowances – Official

A bodyguard of Vice President Dr James Wani Igga killed his colleague and himself after he was told his name was not on an allowance list, the Office of the Vice President has clarified.

On Friday, May 19, 2023, private Kerbino Akok Garang shot dead his senior colleague before turning the gun to himself.

According to the Deputy Press Secretary, the incident occurred after the Vice President who is also the First Deputy Chairperson of SPLM returned from a party retreat in Yei County.

Nelson Leju says upon their return, the soldier asked his senior officer to pay his incentives, but the commander told him his name was not on the list.

This, according to Leju angered the soldier who left and later came back drunk when he shot dead his boss, Lt. Colonel Onori Pitia.

He also injured two others identified as Captain Aloro and Lt. Colonel Raymond who are currently on medication.

Akok later shot himself.

“The deceased named private Kerbino Akok Garang asked his seniors for allowances for the trip however, he was told that his name was not on the list. After hearing from his seniors that his name is not on the list, he went and came back drunk and immediately start shooting at his seniors just like that,” Leju said.

Following the incident, press secretary Leju says the Vice President’s office set up an investigation committee to find out what led to the shooting.

‘The investigation committee has started their work, soon or later they will come out with recommendations and report,” adding that  “the families of the two deceased were called by the investigation committee so that they can know exactly what triggered the incident,

Nelson said security organs are now investigating the matter, and the situation is now calm.
