Parliament adjourns Tuesday’s sitting to mourn death of Upper House Speaker’s wife

The national parliament adjourned sitting on Tuesday to allow lawmakers to mourn the death of the Council of State Speaker’s wife.

The members of the house were supposed to deliberate on the Quarterly Macroeconomic Report for the Fiscal Year 2022-2023 to be presented by the Minister of Finance and Planning.

Deng Deng, the Speaker for the Council of States lost his wife last evening.

She succumbed to high blood pressure, according to the Assembly’s Deputy Speaker.

Oyet Nathaniel, the House Deputy Speaker said adjourning the session will allow members of parliament to pay condolences to the Speaker’s family.

“After consulting with the members of the leadership of the two houses, we have reached a conclusion that in solidarity with his family [Speaker of Council of State], we could not proceed with the sitting this morning [May 23, 2023]. To this end, we adjourn the sitting accordingly,” said Oyet.

Deputy Speaker Nathaniel did not state when the sessions will resume.
