Some local farmers in Twic County of Warrap State are calling on communities in the flooded plains of the country to plant rice as an adaptable crop that overcomes climate adversity.
Warrap is among the most flood-hit areas in the country – a situation that leads to crops failure and dire food insecurity.
And as a result, malnutrition had been reported in several parts of the state.
However, in the beginning of last rainy season, the UN Food Agency (WFP) introduced new crops including rice to help the flood-affected areas overcome the effects of climate change.
The support which included technical skills to farm, helps the communities to make good use of floodwater to plant rice, which is resistant to floods and yields good harvest.
James Majong Deng, a member of a group of farmers on a 31 feddan’s rice garden encourages the neighboring communities and the entire country to plant the new crop in order to eradicate food insecurity.
He said, with the production, there is reduced importation of rice from Juba as communities buy the locally produced yield.
Majong expressed optimism of expanding the farm in the near future to increase resilience within the area through agriculture.
On her part, a female farmer identified as Angong Deng said, she’s sheltering 15 members in her family, and all depend on the produce from the rice farm.
The local farmers spoke to Journalists on Wednesday in Turalei, Twic County in Warrap State.
