Unity State government on Wednesday repatriated nearly 1,000 Internally Displaced Persons who sought sanctuary at a United Nations peacekeeping base in Abyei Administrative Area.

The 943 IDPs were reportedly extracted from UNISFA’s temporary base, where they took refuge following deadly clashes between Abyei youth and Twic youth backed by some Bul youth on February 2, 2024.

In a press statement, the office of Governor Nguen Manytuil said the civilians were safely returned to Mayom County while dozens of others were taken home to Twic County in Warrap State.

Upon arrival in Mayom Town, the IDPs were integrated to their houses or with their families and communities, the statement said.

“(Commissioner), Hon Luka Chierey said the County authorities in collaboration with State government is providing food items, shelters and land to the IDPs for the settlement and integration into local communities,” it said.

Commissioner Chierey said the state government is also in coordination with the authorities in the Abyei for the “safe return of stranded IDPs in the Amiet and Naham area” at the northern Abyei region.

The nine hundred IDPs and many more were displaced in Mayom County and others part of the State due to the devastating flood engulfed the whole state in 2021.
