The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Jane Charles as one of the assistant referees for the upcoming All African Games in Ghana 2024, national fooball body said.
Jane Charles, an international referee from South Sudan, earned her FIFA badge in 2021 and has since showcased outstanding performances in national and regional competitions, according to SSFA.
“This appointment marks a significant milestone for Charles, as she will be the first female referee from South Sudan to officiate in one of the biggest continental competitions,” reads the statement.
Jane has become the second South Sudanese referee in the tournament after compatriot Malong Ring, who represented his country in the previous All African Games in Morocco 2019.
According to SSFA, CAF’s decision to include Jane Charles underscores the organization’s commitment to promoting gender equality and diversity in African football officiating.
“Ms. Charles’ inclusion is not only a testament to her skill and dedication but also a step forward in breaking gender barriers in football refereeing.”
