The United Kingdom has contributed 650,000 United States dollars to support South Sudan’s preparedness efforts against a possible Ebola outbreak.

The funding, channelled through the World Health Organization (WHO), will help South Sudan enhance surveillance, strengthen emergency response systems, improve laboratory capacity, and support frontline health workers in detecting and responding to potential Ebola cases.

British Ambassador to South Sudan David Ashley discussed the support during a meeting with the country’s newly appointed Minister of Health, Luke Thompson Thoan.

The two officials also addressed broader challenges facing the health sector, including the need for increased government investment in healthcare services.

The UK described the contribution as part of its longstanding partnership with the people of South Sudan and its commitment to supporting the country’s public health priorities.

“As a longstanding friend of the South Sudanese people, the UK is supporting South Sudan to make urgent preparations for a possible Ebola outbreak. This includes our immediate financial contribution (USD650,000) through the WHO Republic of South Sudan, ” a posted on British Embassy stated.

Health experts have warned that South Sudan remains vulnerable to outbreaks of infectious diseases due to limited healthcare infrastructure, population displacement, and cross-border movements
