Lawmakers representing Twic East, Duk, and Bor counties in Jonglei State have called for urgent government intervention to contain escalating violence over fishing grounds in the Sudd wetlands.

The group of lawmakers, known as the Greater Bor Parliamentary Caucus, said in a statement issued on Thursday that the violence in swamp areas of Jonglei is spreading and threatening surrounding communities.

The MPs said they held an emergency meeting to discuss the worsening security situation in several parts of Jonglei, including road junctions and swamp areas.

They expressed concern over a recent surge in violence, which they said began in Duk and Twic East counties before spreading to Bor, Ayod, and Lou Nuer areas.

According to the caucus, members received a detailed briefing on the conflict and reviewed information from recent consultations with the Chief of Defence Forces and the Governor of Jonglei State.

The parliamentary group said the situation requires urgent and coordinated efforts to prevent further escalation and restore stability in the affected areas.

Among its recommendations, the caucus called on local leaders to intensify peace and reconciliation efforts to reduce tensions among communities.

It also urged the commissioners of Duk, Twic East, and Bor counties to work closely with youth leaders, traditional chiefs, and Payam administrators to promote peace and address the causes of violence.

The lawmakers further appealed to Jonglei Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kok to fully implement resolutions reached during previous peace conferences and activate the Special Traditional Customary Court to strengthen local conflict resolution mechanisms.

The caucus also called on the national government to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to thousands of people reportedly displaced by the violence in the swamp areas.

In addition, the lawmakers demanded an immediate cessation of hostilities in the Toch and road junction areas, describing them as critical economic zones supporting local livelihoods.
