The National Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation plans to construct 500 water yards across South Sudan. The project aims to improve access to clean water and help reduce the impact of seasonal flooding.

In an exclusive interview with Eye Radio, Undersecretary Sultan Lam Tungwar said the initiative was discussed during a meeting with Senior Presidential Envoy on Special Programs, Adut Kiir.

Lam said the discussions focused on South Sudan’s interests in Nile water management, improving water connectivity in Juba, and strengthening the capacity of water treatment plants across the country.

“Our focus is on improving water connectivity in Juba and building technical capacity for water treatment plants across the 10 states,” Lam said.

He said the project will benefit communities nationwide, particularly in rural areas where access to safe drinking water remains limited.

“We recognize that water is life, and this time our efforts extend to all 10 states and the three administrative areas, with a focus on rural areas to ensure that everyone has access to clean water,” he added.

Lam said technical procedures and approvals are currently underway before the official launch of the project.

“After those processes are over, we’ll do a massive launching in Juba to ensure that they are all divided into the relevant states,” he said.

According to Lam, ministry officials and implementing partners will then travel to the states to coordinate with governors, county commissioners, chiefs, and local communities to oversee implementation.

He expressed confidence that the launch could take place soon.

“Within a few days or a month, the launching of the 500 water yards will definitely be done, and commencement can start immediately before implementation,” Lam said.

The ministry says the project forms part of broader efforts to address recurring floods, strengthen disaster preparedness, and improve access to safe water across South Sudan.
