The World Health Organization (WHO) has delivered blood bank refrigerators to hospitals in Wau and Aweil and installed solar power systems at Aweil Teaching Hospital as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare services across South Sudan.
The initiative is funded through the Health Sector Transformation Project, supported by the World Bank, and aims to improve critical health infrastructure in facilities serving thousands of patients.
According to WHO, the new blood bank refrigerators will significantly improve the safe storage of blood and blood products at Wau and Aweil State Hospitals, helping medical staff respond more effectively to emergencies, surgeries, and maternal health complications.
At Aweil Teaching Hospital, newly installed solar panels are expected to provide a more reliable source of electricity for essential services, reducing disruptions caused by power shortages and improving the overall quality of patient care.
The support forms part of a broader programme to equip 13 health facilities across the country with vital infrastructure and medical equipment.
Health officials say investments in reliable power systems and blood storage capacity are critical to strengthening healthcare delivery, particularly in remote and underserved areas where facilities often face operational challenges.
The project is expected to contribute to improved health outcomes and support efforts to build a more resilient healthcare system capable of meeting the growing needs of South Sudan’s population.
