South Sudan and Uganda have raised visa fees between the two countries from $50 to $100. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Ugandan authorities first raised the money without consulting them.

The Spokesperson, Mawien Makol, says the two countries are now discussing whether to reduce the fees.

“It seems to be something that was discussed within the Ministry of Interior of Uganda,” Amb Makol said.

“But apparently it was a decision taken by the Ministry but was not discussed in their council of Ministers. So they are looking into this.”

South Sudanese travelling to Uganda have expressed concerns that the alleged rise in visa fee will affect them since most of them who travel to Uganda are students.

They say they will not be able to afford the increase citing lack of hard currency back home.
