The Chairman of the opposition party, SPLM –for Democratic Change has urged IGAD mediators to adopt the approach used in to reach the Arusha Agreement.

Dr Lam Akol said the Arusha agreement for the reunification of the SPLM factions brought the warring factions closer to a peace agreement.

He was speaking during a public debate organized by the Civil Society Consortium for Engagement for Peace and Democratic Governance.

“I think there is something very positive that happened in Arusha and that has contributed to what I call a success. The signing of the document itself is a success for me, regardless of what happened afterwards because we have not signed a document in Addis Ababa.” He said.

“.… In Arusha I think the development of the document itself is something that people should really appreciate. So, IGAD should borrow a leaf from the success of the Arusha mediation.” He supplemented.

The Liaison Officer to IGAD Peace Mediation, Beny Gideon, urged the SPLM to transfer what they signed in Arusha to the Addis Ababa talks.
