The Former Detainees have welcomed the government’s decision to cooperate in discussing the deployment of a regional protection force authorized by the UN Security Council.

They say the four-day visit by the Security Council, which ended on Monday, has demonstrated best what the international community places on peace and stability in South Sudan.

After the visit of the 15 member team to Juba, the government said it gave consent to the deployment and said it would discuss further the details about the force.

In a statement, the Former Detainees, also known as the SPLM Leaders, have commended the Transitional Government of National Unity for cooperating with the council and putting the interest of the citizens first.

The FDs also praised President Salva Kiir for urging the African Union to move quickly with the establishment of the Hybrid court to end impunity in the country.

However, they say they are concerned about individuals in the unity government giving misleading interpretation of some terms used in the joint communique, including the word ‘consent’.

The former detainees are urging the Transitional Government and the UN Security Council to stand firm by the consensus reached in the joint communiqué.
