Peaceful resolution will come from the grassroots – Nuer women

A group of women leaders from the Greater Upper Nile region is calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict from the grassroots.

The women group, calling itself Nuer’s Women for Peace, urges the three governors of Upper Nile region to support them in bringing peace and unity among their citizens.

The governor of Upper Nile State, Simon Kun welcomed the peace within initiative. He spoke at a meeting to discuss the initiative in Juba yesterday.

“What we have discussed are ways forward – how we can come together as Nuer and then approach other tribes or other ethnic groups so that we can talk peace with them,” said Governor Kun.

“So, that when Addis Ababa peace comes, it will find us organized…..it will be a genuine peace.”

A member of the National Legislative Assembly, James Kok, said the leadership of greater Upper Nile State is behind the women’s group:

“Irrespective of whatever happened, peace must come to South Sudan. This is a call from Nuer Leaders of Women and they are asking their counterparts to participate and be with them in making peace. Peace is the only key for South Sudan at the moment.”

The meeting resolved to support the grassroots peace initiative and called for a conference of Greater Upper Nile.

The guest of honor was the speaker of the national parliament, Manasseh Magok.

The governor of Jonglei State, John Kong Nyuon, and the Governor of Upper Nile, Simon Kun attended the meeting.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Ministers of Education and Youth among other high ranking government officials also attended.
