Oxfam evacuates staff as Upper Nile fighting intensifies

Author : | Published: Wednesday, May 20, 2015

The humanitarian organization, OXFAM says it is evacuating its workers from Malakal in Upper Nile and Nyal in Unity due to increased violence.

It says this will leave thousands of civilians without access to needed assistance.

The organization has also warned that there will be high rates of malnutrition and severe hunger in the conflict affected areas by the end of June if the fighting continues.

It says more than 3.5 million people are likely to be affected, majority of whom are in areas that are difficult to access.

“We are alarmed and deeply concerned by reports from eyewitness accounts of targeted rape and killing of civilians, including children,” Said Oxfam’s South Sudan Country Director Zlatko Gegic.

The agency urges the warring parties to urgently stop the fighting and restore peace.

“We are appealing to the warring parties to stop fighting.”
