The national assembly has summoned the ministers of Defense, Security and Interior brief them about the recent fighting in Western Equatoria.

The governor has also been asked to appear. On Friday, the executive director of Mundri West County, John Cleopa, was killed in an ambush. This led to unrest and gun fight among SPLA soldiers.

The army says 18 people, including five civilians were killed. Thousands of people fled to Yei County.

A member of parliament from Western Equatoria State, Murad Misaka, raised a motion in the parliament, seeking the transfer of the army soldiers in the county.

“Although more security forces have been heavily deployed in the area from Juba and Maridi with mandate to restore order and tranquility, yet the security situation is confused and tense,” Hon Misaka said.

12 MPs signed up for the motion. Paul Yoane Bonju, who represents Yei County, said such incidents of killing continue to happen due to lack of social justice.

“I want to urge this house that those on top of our judiciary system if possible they must be requested to tender their resignations,” said HonBonju.

The Leader of Minority, Onyoti Adigo, says the government should be issuing clear statements on such issues.

He said that in this particular fighting in Mundri West County, it was not clear from the authorities whether it was a random gunfire or a rebellion:

“So we don’t know exactly who is killing who and according to the spokesperson it seems that there are some rebellions in this area, but we don’t know how far it is true.”

After the discussion, the MPs resolved that the ministers of security, defense and interior shoud appear before them to explain what happened in Mundri West County.

The SPLA has said that there is a new rebellion in Western Equatoria, headed by former MP, Charles Balogore.

The army says it is this group now fighting the government.
