Human Rights Commission records ‘wide scale’ rights abuses

The South Sudan Human Rights Commission says it has recorded a wide scale violation of human rights since December.

These violations have been recorded by both the government and SPLM/A – in opposition.

The human rights commission is calling on both parties to respect lives and properties of the citizens.

The chairperson of the commission, Lawrence Korbandy told the press yesterday that the commission has found serious cases of rights violations in Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile states.

Mr. Korbandy says the commission recommends that all sectors of the society uphold individual rights in the country.

“The key among the recommendations is a call for government and rebel forces to respect and protect human rights and for them to facilitate humanitarian assistances to the victims of the conflict,” he said.

The commission also “calls up on the fighting forces to accept this as a fact and not only realize but commit to the fact the only solution to this conflict is through dialogue and negotiations with the view to reaching a political settlement since essentially the origin of the conflict was political in nature”.

Lawrence Korbandy said the report of the commission has presented to the National Assembly for them to act on it.
