The government says it has rejected a draft UNMISS mandate that was proposed by the US on Monday.

The US government had suggested to the UN Security Council 4000, as the number of troops to make up the foreign protection force to be deployed in Juba.

It said the force will ensure that there is peace in the country by securing the capital and protecting the airport and other key facilities.

“Yes we are a young nation, but we are members of all the regional organizations and we have the right to exist like other countries in this world,” Information Minister Michael Makuei told the media on Wednesday.

“And nobody has the right to take away our sovereignty. Whatever is brought here, the government of South Sudan is against it. It does not accept it, it is rejected. If it is to be imposed, then that would be a different language all together.”

In the resolution, the US would approve the force “to use all necessary means, including undertaking robust and active steps and engaging in direct operations when necessary”.

The US expressed readiness to impose an arms embargo on South Sudan if the leaders of the Transitional Government of national Unity fail to cooperate with the decision.
