The head of South Sudan Fish Producers and Traders’ Union has condemned the killing of a foreign fisherman in Bor County of Jonglei state on Friday.

On Sunday, the state police commissioner said the deceased, a 32-year-old Ugadnan national named Eric Yassin, was killed at mid-night at the bank of the river Nile in Anyidi Payam of Bor County.

Major-General Elia Costa said the victim was at his business point next to the river with three colleagues when a lone assailant approached and fatally shot him.

According to the police, the surviving colleagues said they were asleep at midnight when a gunman appeared, pointed a gun at them, asked who they were, before shooting the victim and running away.

In a strongly worded statement, Dut Diing, the Chairperson of the Fish Producers and Traders’ Union of South Sudan has condemned the act and called on the authorities to investigate the crime and bring perpetrators to justice.

“We reject and condemn the incident and leave the matter to the police to deal with it through investigations and referring the case to court,” he said.

Mr Diing said the union will send a delegation from the Union to follow up on the investigations.

“Such senseless violence not only claims innocent lives but also poses a threat to the livelihoods of those contributing to the fish industry,” he added.
