Two people, including a national security officer and a civilian, were killed in a road ambush in Kajo-Keji County of Central Equatoria State on Saturday, the commissioner said.

Phanuel Dumo told Eye Radio that the security officers were escorting a landlord to assess an area reportedly plagued by illegal loggers in  Kangapo Payam when they were waylaid by “criminals.”

Mr. Dumo said a woman who was hired to cook for the mission had been shot and wounded in the ambush. The wounded cook is currently being treated at Kajo-keji Civil Hospital.

“They fell into ambush organized by criminals, so in the process, one soldier of the national security was killed, and the other one is just a civilian who was not part of the team,” he told Eye Radio in an interview.

The motive of the attack is unclear, but Commissioner Kenyi said a crackdown was immediately launched to track down the assailants.

“One of the women was hit by the bullet and now she is in the Kajo-Keji civil hospital. We cracked down on these people and we are yet to establish where this group comes from in particular.”
