Do not divide people along ethnic lines, media told

Author : | Published: Saturday, July 4, 2015

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan has called on all media houses in the country not to divide the people along ethnic lines.

The Citizen and Juba Telegraph Newspapers this week published opinion pieces that criticized the UN body for ‘taking side in the conflict’.

In a statement, the UN rejected allegations of ethnic bias and political favoritism contained in an article in today’s edition of The Juba Telegraph newspaper.

The UN also called on the media in the country to avoid what it calls baseless accusations and disinformation that can divide the people along ethnic lines.

This is the second time in a week the United Nations Mission in South Sudan has denied allegations of its failure to protect civilians.

One person was killed and six others wounded during a shooting incident at the UN camp in Malakal on Wednesday.

There are over 140,000 IDPs currently sheltering in UN camps across the country.
