The Council of Ministers has directed the Ministry of Education to send a representative to Cairo to resolve financial issues of students on government scholarship in Egypt.

The students have been camping at the embassy for a week now, demanding payment of their bursaries.

There are about 160 students on government scholarship in various universities in Egypt. Each receives an allowance of $100 US dollars per month.

They say the money has not been paid for almost a year now.

The Deputy Minister of Information, Rachael Nyadak, says the representative is going to investigate the circumstances of the strike.

She spoke after the meeting of the Council of Ministers this evening.

“The Council resolved that the representative from education can be sent to Egypt so that they make necessary arrangement on how this issue of strike that they are doing can be resolved and the necessary procedures can be taken and the measures against those who are disobedient,” Ms Nyadak said.

The students are still at the embassy. They say they have not eaten anything since they occupied the embassy. They say the cost of rent and food is now difficult to afford without the bursaries.

They want the embassy to pay the money or meet their cost of living.

The student’s representative Kot Maker told Eye Radio this morning that the embassy has threatened to call Egyptian security on them if they do not leave the premises by this afternoon.
