Six detained over Awerial market prices protests

Author : | Published: Tuesday, April 28, 2015

Six traders in Awerial County in Lakes state have been arrested for protesting against government efforts to regulate market prices.

Authorities issued an order this week preventing traders from inflating prices of all goods. They said people can’t afford the recent increases in cost.

Shops and business remain closed since yesterday. Chris Moral Maker has more from Mingkaman.

The ongoing protest by traders is affecting the 75,000 IDPS in Mingkaman.

Aid agencies give vouchers that have to be cashed in the market within a specific period of time. IDPS are struggling to buy essential food items.

“The market is closed and these people have vouchers which they need to go and use in the market,” reported Eye Radio’s Chris Marol.

However, Marol says the cash vouchers will be invalid soon.

“The vouchers have the dateline whereby if you have to use it within a given. So, it is one of the things people are worried about.”
