Elections only after peace- UDF party

Author : | Published: Friday, December 26, 2014

The opposition United Democratic Front party says it does not support the call by other political parties to conduct the elections before the conflict ends.

In an exclusive interview with Eye Radio, the leader of U-D-F, Peter Abdulrahman Sule says elections should not be held next year before the warring parties sign a final peace agreement.

“…this happen in places that are supposed to be peaceful places. What about in Jonglei, Upper Nile and Unity States, and even in some places in Bahr El-Ghazal no peace? No proper security” Sule said.

Sule says if elections are held before peace, they will not be free and fair because there is rampant insecurity in many areas in South Sudan.

“When you say you want to make elections under these conditions are you really trying to make free, fair, and transparent elections? Or you want to make an election, which was like the last election where there was rigging? And why do you insist on elections now to do what? Why do you insist on elections before peace? Because you want to do what really?” Sule questioned.

Peter Sule says if the election is conducted before lasting peace is achieved, it would create obstacles to peace and would justify the continuation of the conflict.

The government says elections must take place before July next year in order to guarantee its legitimacy.
