The Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission say it is planning to resume weekly meeting of its members in Juba.

Its chairperson, Festus Gontebanye Mogae says in a Statement that he met with President Salva Kiir and Taban Deng this week, and is also continuing to make efforts to resume communications with Dr. Riek Machar, in order to find a solution that promotes peace in South Sudan.

Mogae says regarding the recent appointment of Taban Deng Gai as a replacement for Dr. Riek Machar as the First Vice President, the matter should be considered and deliberated upon by its members, both South Sudanese and International Partners, as JMEC’s mandate demands that it remains balanced and impartial in all matters.

The body says the meeting with President Salva Kiir included talks about the consideration for the deployment of a regional protection force in accordance with the recommendations of the IGAD Plus Summit and the Summit of African Union Leaders.

JMEC chairperson is expected to engage members of the Commission in high level discussions next week, before making a presentation to the United Nations Security Council in August.

JMEC’s weekly meetings are often attended by representatives from all the parties that signed the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan.

Last time the body met, was weeks before the resumption of violence in Juba.
