WHO confirms the cholera outbreak in Juba

The World Health Organization has issued a statement confirming a cholera outbreak in Juba.

The disease outbreak was not yet confirmed because samples were still being tested to ascertain it.

The organization says it is working with other health partners to carryout sensitization messages across the country.

The WHO confirmation of cholera outbreak in Juba comes after 10 samples of suspected cholera cases tested positive for Vibrio Cholera Inaba in the National Public Health Laboratory.

It says in Jubek State, 281 cholera cases, including 5 deaths were recorded as of 25th July 2016.

The WHO says the most affected locations in Juba include Gorom, Khor William, and Giada, Tiger area.

In Jonglei State, 46 suspected cholera cases with 7 deaths were also reported in Duk County.

A statement by WHO also says samples taken for laboratory tests from Terekeka State, where 12 cases with 5 deaths were recorded, turned out to be that of cholera.

Meanwhile, the MSF says it is launching cholera vaccination campaigns in Juba today.

The organization says the exercise will target about 4,000 people in various locations in Juba –including protection of civilians’ sites.

It says in juba, oral rehydration points have been set up in public health centers Gurei, Kator, Lologo, Gumbo, Munuki, Gorom, Morobo, Mahad, Khor Williams, Al Geida, Al Sabbah Children’s Hospital and Juba Teaching Hospital.

These points are open from 7:00AM to 6:00PM every day.

MSF also encourages the public to call the 1144 toll-free emergency line, to report any of cholera suspected cases.
The public is advised to use latrines; wash hands with soap or ash, and make sure to keep places where you eat are clean.

A message from MSF says; Cholera can kill, but with early medical care, there are high chances of complete recovery.
