Gov’t asked to conclude inquiry into Malakal killings quickly

The former Political Detainees have urged the government and UNMISS to quickly conclude investigations into the killing of civilians last week at the UN camp in Malakal.

Eastern Nile state officials and UNMISS say the fighting started between two youth groups in the camp.

But UNMISS says some men in uniform worsened the situation by taking part in the fighting.

Medical charity MSF says 18 people were killed and several others wounded. On Friday last week, Information Minister Michael Makuei said the government had sent a team to probe the deadly incident.

In a statement, the acting leader of the FDs says they note with worry that the killing even took place inside the camp.

“We deplore the continued killing of civilians even after signing of the peace agreement to bring the violent conflict that erupted in our country in December 2013 to an end,” read the statement.

The group urged the government to ‘conclude quickly their investigations into these senseless killing so that the perpetrators can be brought to book’.
