Author : | Published: Thursday, June 27, 2013

A committee has been formed by Sudan to probe the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident which led to the death of the Dinka Ngok paramount chief Kuol Deng Kuol.

Kuol died in the disputed Abyei area last month, when a convoy he was traveling in with UN Security Forces, was ambushed by armed members of the Arab Misseriya.

Sudanese senior government official Doctor Rabie Abdulatti confirmed that investigations are ongoing:

“We want the investigation committee to get those criminals who killed the chief.

“The criminals must be brought to justices. We are not looking into tribal aspects, but we are looking at the interest of the citizens –as equals.’’

However, the former administrator of Abyei, Deng Arop, told Eye Radio that, to ensure an honest investigation, neutral parties must be involved.

“It should a Joint Committee that includes individuals from South Sudan and Sudan and a neutral body such as the African Union or the UN.

“We’re waiting for Sudan to implement this recommendation, so that they arrest the killers, and put them to jail…”

The headquarters of the committee will be based in Difra, with the view of moving to Abyei in the future with the assistance of UN Interim Forces in Abyei.
