Abyei

Three people have been killed in an attack by suspected Misseriya militiamen in Abyei, an official has said.

The gunmen shot two people dead in a raid on cattle camps in two villages yesterday. Another person later died of his wounds.

“UNISFA managed to follow the raiders and returned the cattle after the militias had fled,” said Deng Arop, Deputy Minister of Housing and Physical Planning and represents Abyei in the National Assembly.

Both South Sudan and Sudan claim ownership of Abyei.

The two countries have not agreed on how to conduct a referendum to determine the status of the region.

Last week, a similar attack in the area left two people dead – a child and UN peacekeeper.
