An eyewitness is appealing to the United Nations agencies and non-governmental organizations to intervene and provide urgent humanitarian assistance to rescue suffering South Sudanese at Khor Worol camp in Sudan’s White Nile.

At least 17 South Sudanese refugees including 14 children sheltering at Khor Worol camp in Sudan’s White Nile have died of illnesses amid dire humanitarian conditions in recent days.

“Within 72 hours, on dates 8th, 7th, and 6th of August 202,  14 children died in addition to 3 seniors in the camp alone in the Worl River, and a total of them three children are children of one mother,” said Lam.

A mother lost three of her children in a day due to diseases and starvation in the camp.

Philip Lam says infections and malaria diseases are killing children and the elderly in the United Nations camps in White Nile due to a lack of medicine.

A photo shared with Eye Radio showed ailing mothers and children queuing at a health facility in desperate need of treatment with others lying on the ground.

Lam said health centers in Khor Worl camp are overwhelmed with malnourished and sickly people.

“The lack of medicines has worsened the situation, even though doctors are trying their best to save the lives of children. Doctors in Khor Worl camp are now appealing for urgent assistance from humanitarian organizations to supply the camp with medicines, especially anti-inflammatory and malaria drugs, to save children’s lives.”

Lam said many of the children died of treatable diseases and malnutrition in Wurl Creek Camp, a 2000-square-meter cemetery.

The camp representative appealed for urgent assistance and intervention from humanitarian agencies such as the Red Cross and the UN children agency, UNICEF to provide urgent health services.
