A fact-finding team from the Office of the President has called for reconciliation and healing in Yei River State.

The team, led by Presidential Advisors on Military Affairs, Daniel Awet Akot and that of Special Affairs, Clement Wani Konga, spent two days in Yei town engaging leaders and the communities there in dialogue.

The visit was to investigate the causes of rampant killings, displacements, and insecurity along the major roads in the state.

Speaking during a public rally on Monday in Yei town, Daniel Awet Akot called for confidence-building between the government and the population in the state.

Awet Akot called on the army to respect the civil population.

“I want the state parliament and the executive to build confidence with the community chiefs,” he stated.

“Be together, understand yourselves, respect your government and citizens; and you the soldiers, behave as responsible soldiers protecting the lives of the people.”

The high-level team that consisted of senior security officers and legislators met with religious leaders, area MPs, the Executive, and women and youth groups in the state.

Meanwhile, the chairperson of the Youth Union in Yei says the government must secure the country’s major roads.

Daniel Abate Ali says the killing of civilians in road ambushes is an act against humanity and freedom of movement:

“There are people killing people on highways, and we as youth condemn such acts, more especially on the killing of people on the Yei-Juba road.”
