A new paramount chief has been elected in Yei River County, Central Equatoria State.

The Local Government Act of 2009 provides for an election of a paramount chief to oversee implementation of customary laws.

There were three candidates who contested for the single seat. 16 executive chiefs voted in the presence of representatives from the legislative council and other officials.

Joseph Brown from Mugwo Payam won 13 votes, beating Justine Modi of Lasu Payam by four votes.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Brown said he would work to unite people, and provide justice to the local people.

“Our people are crying a lot; their lands have been grabbed. I’m ready to take the leadership and address our issues,” he said.

Brown added that he would work to improve the working conditions of chiefs.
