Two members of Warrap State Legislative Assembly who were detained over the weekend have been released.

Hon Amet Amet and Hon Ariec Mayar had been accused of organizing a protest against the state government over food shortage.

The lawmakers were also allegedly behind the recent students’ protest in Kuacjok Secondary School over changes in the education system.

They were arrested by the state security on orders of the governor.

The speaker of the state assembly, Madot Deng, says the MPs were released without charges.

“One of them immediately phoned me and thanked me for the effort the assembly has made for their release,” Mr Deng confirmed.

Warrap State Assembly had condemned the arrest and called for immediate release of the law makers. The MPs say the procedures of the arrest were not constitutional.
