The Warrap State government said Sunday it has facilitated the compensation of 14 people who were killed during communal conflicts between 2019 and 2021.

The state customary courts made the decision in reference to what is called “The Green Book” – a traditional set of laws stipulating that anyone who intentionally kills during conflict must compensate 51 heads of cattle to family of the deceased.

Warrap Information Minister William Wol Mayom said the victims died in revenge attacks involving armed men from the four Payams of Tonj South County.

Mayom said the cases were handled by traditional courts where the families demanded blood compensation.

The minister told Eye Radio a total of 327 herds of cattle were collected and handed over to the families of the victims.

“The governor of Warrap State and his accompanying delegate officiated the handing over of 327 herds of cattle for blood compensation in Tonj South to fourteen people who were intentionally killed during the conflict of 2019-2021 conflict respectively,” Mr Mayom said.

“Manyangok collected 127 herds of cattle to compensate the people of Tonj Payam who were intentionally killed by the citizens of Manyangok, while Tonj Payam collected 151 to compensate victims of Manyangok.”

“In the same process, Palal Payam compensated two people of Manyanagok and Nyapagok also compensated one victim of Manyangok, that makes a total of 14 victims of the communal conflict.”

Minister Mayom further said there are families of dozens of people killed who are yet demanding blood compensation.
