The United States Government and the European Union are urging Khartoum to reconsider its decision to halt the flow of South Sudan’s oil.

“The US government deplores Sudan’s action and urged Khartoum to reverse this decision,” State Department Spokeswoman Jen Psaki, told reporters in Washington.

She said if the decision is carried out, it would “violate the Cooperation Agreement the two countries signed in Addis Ababa in September last year.”

Meanwhile, The E-U’s Foreign Policy Chief, Catherine Ashton, expressed concern over Sudan’s intention to shut down oil exports from South Sudan and freeze all the Nine Cooperation Agreements.

She warned that such a move by Khartoum would have “serious consequences for the viability of the two states, relations between them and the wider region.”

Miss Ashton urged the two governments to implement The Agreements “unconditionally” and without any threat to dishonor them if problems arise in either country.

The E-U has told the two governments to take immediate action to prevent any support to armed rebel movements in either country and fully demilitarise the Safe Border Zone in accordance with the commitments they have expressed.
