Fighting has stopped in Upper Nile State, where the government troops clashed with the SPLM in Opposition forces last evening, the spokesman of the SPLA has told Eye Radio.

Col Philip Aguer says the Opposition forces had attacked Obodu area in the Shulluk Kingdom.

Col Aguer says the SPLA repulsed the attack without any loss of life.

“The SPLA forces defeated the attackers who withdrew towards the Sudan to a place called Gourdot, and the SPLA inflicted heavy casualties on the rebels,” Col Aguer stated.

“The SPLA is in the control of the situation and situation continues to be calm after that attack.”

He added that the SPLM in Opposition shelled Bentiu in Unity State yesterday.

However, the spokesman of the SPLM in Opposition forces has denied provoking the fighting in Upper Nile.

The UN Mission in South Sudan has confirmed the shelling but did not blame it on any of parties to the conflict.
