Upper House MPs take 10% salary cut to returnees from Sudan

The Council of the States will take a 10% salary cut and redirect the money towards humanitarian support to South Sudanese returnees in the Upper Nile State.

The council during a Friday meeting resolved to take 10% from each member’s salary to help the returnees.

Hon. James Magouk, the Deputy Chairperson of the Economic and Finance Committee at the Council of the States they are planning to send a delegation to Renk to access the situation before delivering the cash.

“The percentage of 10% withheld from the members may reach 7 million pounds or more, which is approximately $10,000,” said Hon. Magok

“The Council of States decided to help the people who fled the war in Sudan and stalled in Renk and Poluch by sending a team to assess the need and the conditions of returnees, and the money will be paid directly to the beneficiaries.”

On Friday, the government released 1 billion pounds to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to respond to the dire humanitarian needs of returnees fleeing the Sudan conflict.

Information Minister Michael Makuei said more than 6,000 returnees including foreign nationals are entering South Sudan daily through 12 border points.
