The Commissioner of Torit County has called for the review of the school curriculum to reflect the true history of the nation and demanded that South Sudan’s history should be rewritten.

Commissioner Atari Jacob Albano says the current educational curriculum has failed to embed important historical details.

Commissioner Albano says his appeal for the amendment of the syllabus to provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of their country’s past.

According to the Commissioner, the proposed review will incorporate diverse perspectives, voices, and experiences that were previously overlooked or disregarded in the educational system.

Jacob stated that history should include the stories of all groups, heroic individuals, and key events.

He argues that this is for students to develop a deeper understanding of their nation’s past and the values that reinforce its struggles and achievements.

“This time let’s talk that we are South Sudanese so that we build a nation. We need to build a prosperous nation with unity to give service delivery to our people,” Albano told journalists in Torit during the 68th anniversary of the Torit Mutiny.

“I need our history of South Sudan to be started from here, from 1955 the history must be rewritten so that our children will learn how to speak and write the history,” he said.

“Nowadays we have seen in the school curriculum that we are seeing the history is not reflected well,” he added.

“The history of South Sudan in the struggle for liberation is not written well, our MPs especially East Equatoria at the National level you need to do a lot, our MPs at the state level we need to do a lot.”

The official says he believes that an accurate portrayal of South Sudanese history will foster a sense of identity, pride, and national unity among the people.

According to experts, revising the school curricula shall involve collaboration among educational experts, historians, cultural leaders, and community members.
