Let’s not talk about federal system now – Kiir

Author : | Published: Thursday, May 22, 2014

President Salva Kiir is urging the people of Greater Equatoria Region not to demand a federal system of government now as the country is still at war.

The President says he believes that the move would create disunity among the people of South Sudan.

He told SPLM members and leaders of the opposition parties in Juba yesterday that federation is what all South Sudanese need, but this is not the right time to call for it.

President Kiir said some people have already been demanding for confederation.

“What has appeared in Addis Ababa is [that], all the greater Equatorians there are people who went there with their agenda, saying ‘we want federal system to be applied in South Sudan’,” Mr President said.

“And this is what the rebels now click on that they themselves are fighting for federalism.”

President Kiir said a federal system will divide South Sudan into smaller states.

“Why don’t we wait for that time to come when we consult among ourselves; why is it now to cause confusion in this time when there is war?”

During the Greater Equatoria Conference last year, they demanded for the implementation of federal system in South Sudan.
