Prominent Sudanese singer Shaden Gardood was killed in crossfire amid fierce fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Omdurman city.

Gardood was killed on Friday after a mortar hit her house in Omdurman, BBC reports.

The singer known for composing songs about peace in Sudan and the region was killed a day after the Sudanese warring general signed a commitment to protect civilians in Saudi Arabia.

Tribute poured on social media for Gardood, who hails from the marginalized Bagara tribe in the South Kordofan region.

According to Al Jazeera, Gardood lived in the el-Hashmab neighbourhood, which is near the National TV and Radio building, a focal point for the fighting.

The city has witnessed most of the fighting since the war began on April 15, despite several ceasefire agreements.

Gardood is survived by her 15-year-old son, Hamoudy, and her mother and sister.

The fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary RSF erupted in mid-April, when the latter refused to be integrated into Sudan’s army under a planned transition to civilian rule.

More than 600 civilians have died and more than 4,000 injured, closing down about 80% of the hospitals with severe food, water and electricity shortages.
