S Sudanese refugees in Sudan need relief aid

Refugees from the South Sudan are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, the South Sudan Embassy in Khartoum has said.

Refugee agency UNHCR estimates the number of South Sudanese civilians who have fled the crisis Sudan at over 100,000.

A Humanitarian Official in the embassy, Kebi Jeramiah Abraham, says large numbers of South Sudanese fleeing the conflict are still arriving to Sudan on daily basis.

Sudanese authorities reportedly refuse to allow the UNHCR to register the South Sudanese refugees and to establish camps for them, saying they are treated like Sudanese citizens and have the right to settle and work where they want.

However, Mr Abraham says some of the refugees who have decided to move out of the camps have difficulties getting jobs.

“Now they cannot survive and there are no job opportunities for them, even there is no assistance for them from humanitarian organizations because the government of Sudan will not allow that,” he said.

“Their situation is very difficult.”

Mr. Abraham said the refugees cannot get jobs in Sudan because they don’t have Sudan’s national identification cards.

He said most of them survive on brewing local alcohol, which is considered illegal in Sudan.
