Sudan has officially announced that it is not going to take part in contributing to the regional protection force expected to be deployed in South Sudan soon.

Last Friday, the UN Security Council approved the deployment of 4,000 troops from the regional protection forces in Juba, as part of the U.N. peacekeeping mission.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs in Sudan, Ibrahim Ghandour said his country will not be part of any force that will be deployed in South Sudan for protection.

However, he told Journalists in Khartoum that Sudan will remain as part of monitors and observers or mechanism of supporting peace through IGAD.

According to Sudan News Agency, a press statement from Sudan’s ministry of foreign affairs also mentioned Mr. Ghandour met with the new special envoy of UN to Sudan, Nicholas Haisum and discussed the situations in South Sudan.

The statement indicated that the government of Sudan has sent a strategic plan to African Union trough IGAD on how it can be involved in the situation in South Sudan.
